Ancient tools made today Print E-mail
Saturday, 13 February 2010

Yiannis Exintaris, a 52-year-old artisan from Thessaloniki, manufactures tools and machinery unlike any other.

The tools Exintaris makes in his inventive lab are like those used in ancient times, including water pumps - exactly like those invented by Archimedes in the 3rd century BC.

Some of them are wooden cranes such as the ones used to construct the Parthenon, levers, wind turbines and other functioning replicas of ancient tools made of wood, rope, threads, and animal skins.

The Archimides pump replica is operated manually, draws water from approximately a metre height, and is still used today, for liquid-pumping in India and Pakistan. No pieces of wire, chemical glue, or even metal screws are used.
